Sunday letter

A letter for Sunday 4 October

Dear you,

If you’re up early this week, look up on your way out the door. The moon reached its last quarter yesterday, so it’s a clean half hanging in the morning sky, still there after the sun is up, as if it forgot to go home.

This is the part of the month I think of as the tidy-up. Nothing new wants to be started just yet. What wants attention is everything that is almost finished: the message you’ve drafted three times, the parcel you never sent back, the question you keep circling without actually asking. Those half-done things take more out of you than you’d expect. They sit in the corner of every day and quietly ask to be thought about.

Your one small step: choose one thing that has been almost done for weeks, and by Wednesday evening either finish it or decide, out loud, that you’re letting it go. Both count. Both give you back a little room, and room is exactly what you want before the new moon on Saturday.

Clara
