What is left is a number between one and twenty two, and that number is a card from the Major Arcana, with twenty two read as the Fool.
Most people also get a second card, the reduction of the first, which is why you see birth cards written as pairs like 19/10/1. Two cards, one life, and usually a fair amount to recognize in both of them.

A birthday of 15 May 1990 gives 1 and 5 and 0 and 5 and 1 and 9 and 9 and 0, which is 30, and because 30 is over twenty two you add those digits too, which gives 3: the Empress. When the first total lands between ten and twenty two you also get a second card, the reduction of the first.
What if my birth card is Death or the Tower?
Then you have a card with a far more useful meaning than its reputation. Death is the card of endings and of knowing when something is finished, which makes people honest company. The Tower belongs to people who are steady in a crisis and good at the clearing up afterward. Neither one is a warning, and neither one is about dying.
Is a birth card the same as a star sign or a life path number?
No, although they rhyme. The star sign comes from the calendar, the life path comes from numerology, and the birth card comes from the same digits read as a card. People often find the birth card the easiest of the three to recognize, because it is a picture rather than a label.
