Underneath it there is a short note about what this part of the month is good for, which is less about what the moon does to you and more about what the light overhead makes easy to notice: beginnings in the dark, deciding at the half, finishing while it is bright, and tidying as it goes out again.

Almost full, bright enough to read a street sign by, and rising in the late afternoon. This is the finishing stretch rather than the starting one, and the honest work now is closing gaps rather than opening new ones: the last third of the thing, the boring part, the email that has to go out before anybody else can move. These are also the nights when sleep starts getting lighter for a lot of people, so if you have been waking earlier this week, that may be all it is. Keep the list short and finish something.

Use it roughly the way you would use the weather. A waning week is a fair time to end something small, and a full moon is a poor night for deciding anything at speed, and neither of those is a law about your life.

How is the phase worked out?
From the average length of one lunation, which is 29.53 days, counted forward from a known new moon in January 2000. That is accurate to within a few hours, which is more than enough to know whether tonight is a crescent or a gibbous moon. It is worked out in your browser, so the page is right even if it was cached this morning.
Why does the moon outside look different from the drawing?
Because the drawing shows the lit side as it appears from the northern hemisphere. South of the equator the same phase looks the other way round, and near the equator a crescent can sit like a bowl. The amount of light is the same wherever you are standing.
What is the moon phase actually good for?
Mostly for timing your own attention. There is no reliable evidence that the moon changes your mood or your luck, and there is a long, ordinary human habit of using it as a clock. A month has a rhythm whether or not the moon causes it, and a clock you can see from the doorstep is a pleasant way to keep track of one.
