Nobody can tell you when love will arrive, and anybody who does is guessing with confidence. What can be read, honestly, is the weather you are standing in: how much room your life has, what you are still carrying, and what you would do if someone lovely turned up on a Tuesday. Answer these eight, and you will get three cards for the year ahead. Not a forecast. A picture of what this particular year is asking of you.

    • Some. There are evenings that are genuinely free
    • Almost none, and most of what fills it is not chosen
    • Plenty, and quite a lot of it is spent alone
    • Full, but full of people, in a way you like

  2. When did you last meet somebody new, in any context at all?

    • This month. New faces happen fairly often
    • You cannot remember. It has been the same rooms for a while
    • Recently, but you were not paying that kind of attention
    • Last week, and you thought about it afterward

  3. Imagine a first date three weeks from now. What does your body do?

    • Lifts a little. Nervous in the good way
    • Tires. You picture the effort before the person
    • Tenses, because of who it would not be
    • Grins, slightly, before you can stop it

  4. What are you still carrying from before?

    • Something, but it has stopped running the show
    • More than you let on. It still gets a vote
    • Almost nothing you would call heavy
    • One specific person, and you know their name

  5. What do your evenings look like, honestly?

    • Varied. Some out, some in, both are fine
    • Predictable. Same sofa, same hours
    • Busy with work you have not managed to put down
    • Full of people you love, if not of romance

    • Something real, and you could describe it in a sentence
    • You honestly do not know anymore
    • Not to be alone, mostly
    • You describe a way of feeling, not a type of person

  7. How do you feel about the last relationship, today?

    • Fond, or neutral. It happened, you learned
    • Still sore in places you did not expect
    • Relieved
    • You have not had one recently enough for this to apply

  8. What is different about you compared with a year ago?

    • You want different things, and you know what they are
    • Not much, and that is part of why you are here
    • You are steadier. Less easily talked out of yourself
    • You are more tired, and more honest
