From the twenty fourth of October to the thirteenth of November this year, Mercury appears to move backward against the stars. That is the whole physical event, and I want to describe it accurately before anyone starts rearranging their life around it.
What is actually happening up there
Nothing is going backward. Mercury orbits the sun faster than we do, and three or four times a year it overtakes us on the inside. From where we are standing, the planet appears to slow, stop, track backward for a few weeks, stop again, and resume. It is the same effect as passing a slower car on the highway and watching it slide backward relative to you.
Astronomers call it apparent retrograde motion, and every planet does it. There is no change in the planet’s actual path, no change in gravity, no measurable effect on anything electrical, and no mechanism by which it could reach your laptop.
I say all that not to be a killjoy but because I think the honest version is more useful than the frightening one, and because a lot of people spend three weeks a year genuinely anxious about a piece of perspective.
Why the reputation stuck anyway
Two reasons, and both are about us rather than about the sky.
The first is that the retrograde period gives you a category to put ordinary mishaps in. Trains are delayed and texts are misread every week of the year. During these three weeks they get filed, and the file makes them feel connected.
The second is that it is genuinely useful to have a recurring prompt to slow down and check things. Almost nobody schedules that for themselves. If a planet is what gets you to back up your files and read the contract twice, the planet has done something real, just not the thing it is credited with.
What these three weeks are actually good for
Re-reading. Not because your emails are cursed but because most of us send things faster than we think, and a period with a slow label on it is a decent excuse to reread the difficult message before it goes.
Unfinished business. The traditional association is with things that come back around, and I have no astronomical defense of that, but it is a perfectly good theme for three weeks: the email you never answered, the invoice you never chased, the apology you drafted in August.
Maintenance. Backups, passwords, the thing on the car that has been making a noise. Dull, and worth more than any ritual.
And a bit of tolerance for other people’s misunderstandings, which is a good habit for any three weeks you like.
What the shadow periods are
You will see references to a pre shadow and a post shadow, which are the weeks either side when Mercury is crossing the same stretch of sky it will retrace. In practice this stretches three weeks into something closer to nine, which is most of the autumn.
I mention it because it is the point where a useful prompt turns into a permanent state of caution. If the careful weeks expand until they cover a season, the framework has stopped helping and started running your calendar.
Three weeks of ordinary things worth doing
Reread the contract you skimmed. Answer the email from August you have been carrying guilt about. Check that your backups actually restore rather than merely existing. Sort out the thing on the car that has been making a noise since the summer.
None of that is astrological advice. It is a list of jobs that never get scheduled, attached to a date people will actually keep, which is the most honest use I know for this particular piece of sky.
If it is already a hard autumn
Some people arrive at these three weeks already worn out, and the last thing that helps is a page telling them the next month is going to be difficult. It is not going to be difficult because of a planet.
If things are genuinely hard at the moment, take this as permission to do less rather than as a warning to brace. The most useful version of a slow period is one where you are allowed to be slow in it.
What I would not do
Postpone your life. I have watched people delay signing a lease, taking a job, or having a necessary conversation because of a date in a calendar, and the delay costs something real while the risk it is protecting against is not measurable.
If a decision is good on the twenty third of October it is good on the fourth of November. If it is bad, it was bad before Mercury went anywhere.
If an old name turns up
This is the part of retrograde lore that gets the most attention, and it is worth being plain about. People do get messages from exes during these weeks, at roughly the rate they get them during any other weeks, and the retrograde gives the message a frame that makes it feel significant.
A message is still just a message. What you want is still the question. If that is where you are, the will he come back page is more honest company than the calendar.
Three cards for the three weeks, if you like
Not a forecast. A way of naming what you are actually carrying into November, which is the part you can do something about.
What would you like to look at
Pick the shape that fits the question. You can change your mind at any point before you draw.
Before we start
Twenty seconds, feet on the floor, hand somewhere warm. Breathe in while the circle grows and out while it settles. You can skip this whenever you like.
What is on your mind
In your own words, as much or as little as you like. You can leave it empty and simply draw.
Your cards
Laying them out now.
Clara
Same cards, one more look.
