The turn of a year is arbitrary and it works anyway. Something about a new number on the calendar makes people willing to look at a whole stretch of their life at once, which they will not do on an ordinary Wednesday.
This reading is not a forecast. Nothing in it predicts a month, an event or a person arriving, and the twelve card version that assigns something to every month is a party trick with a long tail of disappointment.
What the three cards are for
What you are carrying in, what is asking to change, and what would help you start. That is enough structure to think against and few enough cards that you will still remember them in March, which matters more than people realize.
What would you like to look at
Pick the shape that fits the question. You can change your mind at any point before you draw.
Before we start
Twenty seconds, feet on the floor, hand somewhere warm. Breathe in while the circle grows and out while it settles. You can skip this whenever you like.
What is on your mind
In your own words, as much or as little as you like. You can leave it empty and simply draw.
Your cards
Laying them out now.

The honest part about the year
Nobody can see your year. Not us, not a deck, not the reader with the confident voice and the annual forecast video. Most of what will define the next twelve months has not been decided by anyone yet, including you.
What is genuinely predictable is what you are bringing with you: the habits, the unfinished conversation, the thing you have been meaning to sort out since two Aprils ago. That is where a year ahead reading earns its keep.
What comes up at the turn of the year
Unfinished business, in almost every reading. The cards land on the thing that was postponed rather than the thing that was planned, and people usually recognize it before the sentence is finished.
The second theme is scale. Almost everyone plans a year as though they will be a different person with more hours in it. The most useful year ahead readings tend to make somebody’s plan smaller and much more likely.
If you want a lighter companion piece, your card for the year gives you one card to hold on to, and the Wheel of Fortune page is honest about how much of a year is genuinely outside anybody’s hands.
A better shape than resolutions
Resolutions fail in the first two weeks for a dull reason, which is that they are usually a list of ways to be a different person, written by somebody at the end of a tiring year.
What survives is one sentence about how you want the year to feel, and two or three things small enough to keep on a bad week. Not fifteen. A year with three things in it that actually happened is a good year, and it reads better in December than a list of twelve abandoned ones.
The question worth carrying
Pick one question rather than one goal, and let it follow you into February. What am I still doing out of habit. Who have I not made time for. What would I do if I stopped waiting to feel ready.
Questions travel better than plans. They survive a bad month without needing to be restarted.
Into the first week
Do one thing from this reading in the first seven days, while the year is still soft. Nothing you start in the second week of February will feel as easy.
And whatever this year was, you got through it, which is not nothing and does not need to have been done gracefully.
Questions people ask
Can a reading tell me what will happen next year?
No. A year ahead reading is not a forecast, and the twelve card version that assigns an event to each month is entertainment. What it can do is show you what you are bringing with you, which shapes a year far more than most people expect.
When should I do a year ahead reading?
Any time the year turns for you. That is often January, and it is just as often a birthday, an anniversary, or the first week of September when everything starts again.
Should I do one card for each month?
You can, and most people find it becomes a horoscope they then argue with in March. Three cards you actually remember will do more than twelve you have to look up.
