Every article about this has the same shape. Twenty signs, all of them flattering, none of them falsifiable, and by the end you are more convinced and no better informed.
I would like to do a slightly different version, because I think the reason people read these lists is not really to learn the signs. It is to be told that the thing they hope is true is true, by someone with no stake in it.
The signs that do hold up
Effort that costs him something. Not a message at midnight, which costs nothing. A specific plan on a specific day, arranged in advance, that he had to rearrange something for. Interest is expensive, and the price is the evidence.
Memory. He remembers the name of your colleague, the thing you were dreading on Tuesday, the fact that you do not like the loud restaurant. People remember what they are paying attention to and they cannot really fake this one for long.
Introductions. Being brought into the rest of his life, even in small ways, is one of the few signals that is hard to produce accidentally. A person who wants you at the edge of things keeps you at the edge of things.
Consistency across weeks rather than intensity within one. This is the least romantic item on the list and the most predictive. Three ordinary weeks tell you more than one extraordinary Saturday.
The ones that mean much less than you have been told
Sustained eye contact. Some people are just like that, and some people are like that with everyone, and the internet has built an entire mythology on it.
Mirroring your posture. It happens between colleagues in a meeting about parking. It is a real phenomenon and it is not a confession.
Fast replies. Fast replies mean a person is on their phone. Slow replies mean a person is not on their phone. The correlation with feeling is far weaker than the amount of analysis it receives.
Teasing you. Sometimes affection. Sometimes a habit. Sometimes he is like this with the barista.
And the whole category of things he did once, three months ago, that you have been keeping in a drawer and taking out to look at. One data point is not a pattern, and I say that as somebody who has kept the same drawer.
Why we over-read
When we want something, we notice the evidence for it and forget the evidence against it. That is not a character flaw, it is standard equipment, and it operates hardest exactly where the stakes feel highest.
There is a second thing going on too. Uncertainty is more than unpleasant, it is absorbing. The not knowing keeps a person interesting far longer than they would otherwise be, which is why the most analyzed men are so often the least available ones. If you have ever wondered why the person who is clearly keen holds so much less of your attention, that is why, and it is worth knowing before you decide he is boring.
What actually settles it
One question, asked in daylight, with no exit built into it. Not we should do something sometime, which is designed to be survivable. Something with a day in it.
The answer to that question will tell you more in ten seconds than four months of decoding. And if the answer is no, you will have lost an evening of pride and got back the whole rest of your attention, which is a trade almost everybody says afterward they wish they had made sooner.
What a reading is good for here
Not for reading him. I will keep saying it because the whole internet says otherwise: no card can see what another person feels.
What it is good for is the part where you already know and are looking for permission to act like it. That is a real use, and it is the reason the does he love me page exists in the shape it does.
If you want the lighter version, the does he like me quiz lays out the evidence you already have without any mind reading involved.
Signs he loves you, which is a different list
People often move from one search to the other within a week, and the second list really is different. Liking shows up in attention. Loving shows up in inconvenience: what he does when it costs him something, when he is tired, when nobody is watching and there is no version of it that will be admired later.
It also shows up in how he handles your bad days. Anyone can enjoy the good version of a person. The evidence is in whether he stays ordinary and useful when you are not at your best.
If the person is already in your life
That is a slightly different situation and it deserves naming. Long friendships, colleagues, somebody you see every week: the reading of signs there can go on for years, because there is always another data point next Tuesday and never any risk.
The risk is the thing that ends it. Not a confession, necessarily, just one clear invitation with a day attached. The answer will be a yes or a no, and either way you get your Tuesdays back.
One last honest thing
The people who are worth it tend to make it fairly obvious, fairly early, in ways that do not require a list. If you have needed twenty signs to decide, the twenty first sign is the needing.
Ask the question. Thursday is a good day for it.
