Almost everyone who asks this is looking for a feeling. A click, a certainty, a moment where the whole thing settles and you simply know. The trouble is that the feeling is a poor test, and quite a lot of unhappy people have had it.
I am not going to talk you out of wanting certainty. I am going to suggest that the question has better versions, and that the better versions are answerable this week.
Why certainty is the wrong instrument
The feeling of certainty is generated by the brain, and it is not calibrated to how good a relationship is. It shows up strongly in the first months of almost anything, when there is very little information and a great deal of chemistry. It shows up during intense, unstable relationships, because uncertainty produces intensity and intensity gets misread as significance.
It is often quietest in the relationships that are actually working, because nothing there is generating alarm. A great many people in calm, decent, twenty year partnerships describe having felt no lightning at all, and describe being suspicious of it at the time.
So if you are waiting to feel sure, you may be waiting for a signal that arrives most reliably in the situations you would least want to be in.
Six questions that tell you more
These are not a quiz and there is no score. They are the questions I would ask a friend at a kitchen table, and the useful answer is the one that arrives before the fair one.
How do you behave when you are with him? Not how do you feel, how do you behave. Are you more yourself or a slightly managed version, and how long has that been true?
What happens after a disagreement? Not whether you argue, everyone argues. Whether anybody repairs it, how fast, and whether it always has to be you.
Can you be boring together? A great deal of a shared life is admin and illness and Sunday afternoons, and the people who last are usually the ones who can be unremarkable in the same room without either of them working.
What does he do when you need something? Not the grand gestures, the tedious ones. The lift to the airport at five in the morning, the sitting in a waiting room, the not making your bad week about him.
Who are you around your people? If you have gone quieter with your friends, or you find yourself editing what you tell them, that is information and it is worth being honest about even though it does not feel fair to say.
And the last one, which is the hardest. If nothing about him changed, ever, would this be enough? Most of the trouble in long relationships comes from an answer of no that is being managed as though it were a yes.
What the cards can honestly do here
Not confirm him. No card certifies a partner, and any reading that claims to has quietly stopped being honest.
What a reading is good at is your own side: what you are carrying in, what you have got used to, what you would ask for if you believed you could. That is genuinely readable, and it is more useful than a verdict would be.
About the word soulmate
People often arrive at this question through that word, and I have written properly about it on the soulmate reading page. The short version is that the word does two jobs. Sometimes it names something real and calm. Sometimes it explains away inconsistency, and it is worth knowing which one you are using it for.
What the first year hides
Early relationships are not a poor sample so much as a different substance. Both people are on their best behavior, neither has been properly ill in front of the other, and nothing has gone badly wrong yet. Almost everything you learn in that period is true and none of it is the whole picture.
The rest arrives later and it arrives during specific events: a bereavement, a job loss, a house move, a bad flu, an argument at a wedding. Those are the weeks that tell you who somebody is, which is why people who have been through one together often sound far more certain than people who have simply been happy for a year.
The version of this question that has fear in it
Sometimes the question is not really can I be sure. It is: I am not sure, and I am frightened of what that says about the last four years.
That is worth separating too. Doubt is not a verdict, it is an ordinary feature of long relationships and it comes and goes. What matters is whether it is doubt about him or doubt about being in it at all, and those two lead to very different next steps.
The thing nobody says out loud
There is no one person. There are several people you could have built a good life with, and the good life comes from the building rather than from the finding. That sounds bleak for about ten seconds and then it becomes the most freeing thing in this whole subject, because it takes the pressure off a decision that was never going to be provable.
The question is not whether he is the one. It is whether the two of you are good to each other, over a long ordinary stretch, on the days nothing is happening.
If you want to take it further
The is my relationship over quiz asks harder versions of these questions if you are somewhere darker than uncertainty, and the marriage reading is for the version of this that has a timeline attached.
What would you like to look at
Pick the shape that fits the question. You can change your mind at any point before you draw.
Before we start
Twenty seconds, feet on the floor, hand somewhere warm. Breathe in while the circle grows and out while it settles. You can skip this whenever you like.
What is on your mind
In your own words, as much or as little as you like. You can leave it empty and simply draw.
Your cards
Laying them out now.

Same cards, one more look.

Whatever you decide, wanting to be sure is not a flaw. It just needs a better test than a feeling.
