This is a gentler question than most of the ones people bring me, and I like it for that. Is he my person is not asking whether he is perfect, or whether he is the one in the grand sense, it is asking something closer to is this the one I would call first, and can I stop looking. I cannot answer it for you, and no card can, but I can tell you what I think the question is made of, because it is made of two things that get mixed up.
The two things are comfort and choice. Comfort is what you have with him now, and it is real and it counts. Choice is what you keep doing on ordinary days, whether you would pick him again if you met him this week, and whether he is picking you. Most of the confusion in this question comes from measuring the first and calling it the second.
What people mean by my person
The phrase came out of a television show and stuck because it was useful. It names something the older words did not, which is the one you tell first, the one whose name your thumb goes to in the elevator after good news before you have decided to tell anyone, the one you can be quiet with in a car for an hour without needing to fix it.
That is a lower bar than soulmate and a much more honest one, and if he clears it, that is worth more than you might think. A great many long and decent lives have been built on exactly that and nothing grander.
Comfort and choice are not the same thing
Comfort is the feeling of the known. It is the way his kitchen sounds, the fact that you do not have to explain your family, the ease of a Sunday. It is a good thing and I am not about to talk you out of it. But comfort also accrues to anything that has been there long enough, including things that are not good for you, and the feeling of not being able to imagine your life without someone is not, on its own, a reason to build one with him.
Choice is different and it is quieter. It is the answer to a slightly rude question, which is whether you would choose him again if you met him this week knowing what you know. That is not the same as whether you would be sad to lose him, which is about comfort. It is whether you would pick him on purpose out of a room, and people who can say yes to that tend to say it fast, while people who need a minute have usually been answering the comfort question and calling it this one.
Is he my person, or is he the person who is there
This is the version I would ask instead, and I ask it kindly. There is a difference between being chosen and being the default, and it is visible in small ways: whether he asks about the thing you were dreading, whether the plans have you in them by design or by habit, whether the good news reaches you first or after his friends have already heard. Those are things you can observe over a normal month without reading anybody’s mind.
And there is the same question in the other direction, which is the harder one. Whether he is your person, or the person who was there when you were tired of looking. There is no shame in the second, and most people have done it at least once, but it is worth knowing which you are living in, because the two need different things from you and the second one tends to go quiet rather than deep.
Whether he has chosen you
You cannot know this from outside and I will not pretend to. What you can do is notice what he does with you when nothing is at stake, and then ask him, in plain words and in daylight, what he wants this to be. That question sounds enormous and is actually quite short, and the answer to it, and the way he behaves in the month after answering, will tell you more than any list, mine included.
If the idea of asking makes your stomach drop, that is information too. People who feel chosen do not usually need to check, and needing to check is not a flaw, it is a sign that something has been left unsaid for a while and would like to be said. I have written about asking it plainly, without the speech, and about the signs that hold up while you are working up to it.
Where the cards come in
There is no card that answers is he my person, and the soulmate reading says so plainly on its own page. What a reading can do is show you your side: the habits you have stopped noticing, the thing you have wanted to ask for since the spring, and whether the calm you are feeling is the good kind or the kind that comes from having stopped expecting anything. That is a fair thing to draw on, and it will do more for you than a verdict about him.
If the question underneath this one is really whether you would find anyone else, that is a different question with its own page, and I would gently point you at will I find love rather than let it sit inside this one unasked.
What is worth doing this week
The next time something good happens this week, even a small thing, notice whose name your thumb goes to first, before you have decided anything. Write the name down that evening, just the name, with no analysis attached. Then, if it was his, notice whether he does the same with you, which you will usually already know. That is the whole exercise, and it is more honest than a quiz.
Come back and tell me whose name it was.
Clara
